The Colonel

The Colonel

Animal ID No: ARF601
Rescue Date: 23 October 2020
Adopted Date: 20 February 2021

The Colonel is one of the loveliest, happiest dogs it’s been his foster carers pleasure to look after.

This beautiful older boy starts the day with a frolic as he plays with a ball or toy while trying to get his carer to hurry up and get out the door for their walk faster. A quick walk is followed by a play in the backyard, then breakfast, then snoozing the day away waiting for his carer to get home and enjoy another brisk walk and dinner, before settling down to snooze in front of the TV.

The Colonel has lovely manners on lead (though his walks are getting faster and longer as he gets fitter) and is learning to be a cafe dog. He has met a number of dogs on walk – some have been nice, some haven’t, but the Colonel has met them all calmly. He doesn’t really understand playing with other dogs, but seems to like their company. However, he does go very shy if the dog barks at him – a Chihuahua barked at him while we were waiting for a coffee and the Colonel had to retire to the fainting couch (which means hiding shyly behind his carer’s legs because the wee doggie didn’t like him and he didn’t understand why).

The Colonel was quite thin when he came into care and it took several weeks to find food he liked – so if you would like to adopt him, you need a decent dog sausage and dry food budget. He does like chicken wings, Schmackos, bones and frozen raspberries (fresh ones didn’t cut the mustard, though).

The Colonel is an older dog and has a number of big old dog issues – he definitely has some back issues that have led to a some wastage in his muscles. However, it hasn’t affected his ability to zoomie like an idiot around the backyard, nor his absolute zest for life.

He sleeps on a dog bed in his carer’s bedroom and snoozes the night away quietly (no snoring!). The Colonel is fully housetrained. It would be preferable for him to go to a house with a dog door, as he gets very hot in summer and needs to stay warm in winter because of his age.

The Colonel does shed a LOT of hair in summer, so isn’t for you if you’re VERY houseproud. However, if you’re a vacuum cleaner salesperson who needs to demonstrate models, he might be the dog for you :).

The Colonel would love to live with people who are home a lot, or a big family with lots of coming and going. He wouldn’t suit a family with small children, as he can get a bit rambunctious when playing and forgets how big he is. He also LOVES to lean against your legs, so you need to make sure you don’t skip leg day at the gym. He may do okay with another quiet older dog, but he is great as an only dog.

The Colonel shouldn’t live with cats or other small animals (he does seem to consider them as a snack).

The Colonel is full of zest for life and wants nothing more than to light up someone’s life and be their bestest friend and spend all day adoring them and being adored.

The Colonel is available for meet and greets now, but will not be able to go to a new home until after 5 February, when he will have a dental.

'Rescued' is my favourite breed
