Thank you for considering an ARF dog. Most dogs receive several enquiries, and we aim to match the right dog to the right home so that they can enjoy a happy life together. If your enquiry is unsuccessful, rest assured that the foster carer has carefully based their decision on a thorough knowledge and understanding of the dog’s needs.

Phoebe is assessed as being in the Silver category in our Perfect Match system is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and available for $350 (incl GST).

Phoebe is the most delightful, easy and lovely companion dog to have around. She has easily settled in to her foster routine of two short walks a day, just about mastering the art of loose lead walking. She enjoys yummy food and treats and either snoozing in front of the TV or on her bed waiting for her foster carer to get home.

Phoebe adores people and loves being near them, though she can be a little timid with men to start with (she soon gets over this and goes back to requesting pats). As she settled in, she lost most of her initial clinginess and is now happy to settle onto her bed and snooze when her carer is doing other things.

She has been known to fill her day with interesting things: bones are good, dream woofing gets a run, asking for the odd snuggle just to make sure you’re still around, supervising from a suitable distance in the kitchen just in case some food drops, enthusiastically dancing at the front door when the bell rings or when a walk is about to happen, and the opportunity to gently and relentlessly murder a stuffed toy or a tennis ball can’t be passed up.

Phoebe knows her basic commands, like sit and stay, as well as door and dinner manners and is perfectly house trained and worked the dog door out in three goes. She doesn’t jump up, and she walks well on a loose lead most of the time, although she can be strong, particularly when there is a tree she REALLY wants to sniff (or there is a fly she really wants to catch). As she is about 40kg, these very occasional brain farts means she will need someone who is comfortable managing a big dog. She loves treats, takes them gently, and is starting to learn about checking in and coming back for a treat instead of getting too excited.

Ready for anything

Ready for anything

Phoebe is an early riser and is generally ready for both a walk and breakfast around 6.30am (though she will settle, often with a dramatic flop and some heart-rending sighs, if you really want her to). She is currently getting two walks a day of around twenty minutes each and loves them. She is took a while to regain her fitness after quite a long time in the pound and the two walks mean she is very happy to sleep through the day when you are out and settle into a deep snooze at night, on her dog bed near her carer’s bed (though she sometimes takes herself off and sleeps on her own bed in the lounge).

Phoebe is excellent with vacuum cleaners and similar noises in the house but a bit scared of thunderstorms and really quite scared of fireworks (even if they’re far away). She does bark when she’s scared (though she can be quickly settled) and does best if you can engage her with some training when a storm starts to divert her from the scary noises.

Phoebe would be wonderful as an only dog who can be the focus of her people’s love, or in a home with a calm and secure dog who won’t stress her out (or vice versa!). She is a bit of an idiot at dog manners – she likes other dogs, but doesn’t really understand what all the rules are though she tries really hard to work them out, so a placid dog that doesn’t want to play too much would be the best match. She likes older children but is probably just a bit too big and heavy for homes with very small children (believe me, you NOTICE if she accidentally stands on your foot!). This big gentle girl is perfect for someone who is looking for a cuddle buddy.
