Pilot

Pilot

Animal ID No: ARF112
Rescue Date: 27 August 2019
Adopted Date: 4 April 2020

Introducing Pilot, a delightful young working breed mix dog looking for a home where he can lead a busy and interesting life.

Pilot came into care from the pound as a bit of a larrikin, jumping up, play biting and other puppy behaviours that should have been long gone. He had evidently missed out on the wider world of moderation in dog play and education so his energetic approach to the joy of living was quite overwhelming for his carers.

During his time in foster care “rehab” Pilot’s youthful enthusiasm and intelligence is being channelled into more appropriate outlets while also learning life skills such as manners, times and places for activities, quiet times, crate training and so on.

The great news is that Pilot LOVES school. He works for both treats and toys and loves mastering new things. He has come a long way since first coming into care and is looking for a home with someone to keep him on the straight and narrow with clear rules, consistent training and teach him how to continue his progress in appropriate work, play and interaction with humans and other dogs. Pilot will need continued training to moderate his arousal levels, practicing impulse control and increasing his obedience skills while also giving him outlets for his energy and intelligence. These could include chasing balls and playing tug (which he absolutely adores!!), however Pilot’s potential is vastly untapped. He is an athlete extraordinaire who shows potential to excel in soooooo many different dog sports, including, but not limited to, Obedience, Agility, GRC Dogsports, Highjump, Frisbee, Sledding.

If you were able to ask Pilot what fills his soul, we are pretty darn sure his answer would be ‘running’. The look of sheer bliss on his beautiful, goofy face when he runs…. He is in absolute heaven! And FAST! We clocked him next to the quad runner at a consistent 36km/hr (uphill). Jumping is his second love. Point at something and ask him to ‘get up’ and he’ll leap tall buildings in a single bound. The car comes in at number 3… man this guy loves going for a ride. Work and training come in at number 4 by a dog’s whisker. Seeing the light in his eyes when he learns something new is pretty darn awesome.

Pilot has basic obedience understanding and walks beautifully on lead. He could potentially be rehomed with another dog, but that dog would need to be older and wiser and would able to clearly let Pilot know when his behaviour and play style was not appropriate. Pilot would also be just as happy as an only dog and has proven himself to be a very loyal dog who loves hard and fast. He has no signs of separation anxiety and is a pleasure to have around.

Pilot is looking for a home with an experienced dog owner, willing to seek professional training advice if required, and who can provide daily exercise and daily activity for him. A home without young children and either a well-behaved dog or no other dog would be best

Pilot is desexed, his vaccinations are up to date and he has no obvious health issues. Typical of the working breed he is very active and can get bored easily but is keen to please and very attentive to the person at the end of the lead.

If you feel that you (or someone you know), might be up for the task of providing the best home for Pilot and guiding him along the next part of life’s grand adventure, please do spread the word and/or contact his carer to find out more about him and how he might fit into your household

'Rescued' is my favourite breed
