Beau

Beau

Animal ID No: ARF715
Rescue Date: 9 April 2021
Adopted Date: 22 April 2022

Beau is looking for a very special home. Due to his previous person’s illness, Beau was a bit of a mess when he came into care. After some time, a few trips to the vet, a few professional grooms and some love and affection, he’s finally ready to try a new home on for size.

The easy part: Beau snoozes most of the day away on his person’s bed, is always eager for a treat, we’ve worked out a good diet for him and he’s happy with one short walk a day.

The hard part: Beau really doesn’t like being brushed, groomed or having a coat put on. He’s very happy to be patted and snuggled, you can pick him to put him on something (he doesn’t enjoy it, so picking him up for snuggles is not recommended), but he has some very firm boundaries about what he likes. This means he needs an experienced owner who can read his doggy language and knows when to push and when to back off.

What would Beau’s ideal life be like? Beau is an older gentleman who would love to live with an older gentleman (he definitely prefers their company!). He’ll happily live with a few people, but he’s really looking for a quiet life with only one or two people to call his own. Because he’s very cute and small, he’s not suitable for living with or interacting much with kids, as they may not understand he shouldn’t be picked up or rumbled with.

Beau really doesn’t like other dogs. He thinks he is the 45kg king of all dogs, when he’s really just a 5kg bully! He will bark at other dogs you meet on walks, but he is very easy to manage and his carer just steers him away quickly and gives him a treat and he quickly settles. But he’s not the kind of dog that wants doggy friends to visit. Because he’s a bully, cats and pocket pets are probably not a good idea.

He needs someone who will let him sleep on their bed (and provide steps for him to get up as he gets older), supply him with a fairly set diet (he’s cheap to feed, but he’s got a dodgy stomach, so his carer would recommend his new owner sticks with the diet we’ve worked out doesn’t upset his tummy) and doesn’t feel the need to pick him up and snuggle him or carry him around. Believe me, once he’s in love with you, he will be one inch away from your heels at all times!

He also needs someone who can afford to have him professionally groomed every couple of months – unfortunately, Beau is a long-haired dog with a hairdressing phobia, so it’s better to keep his hair clipped short and to have a sympathetic and lovely groomer who will gently guide him through that process.

Beau can handle his person leaving the house – he just sits in my front window and pines quietly until you come home. But he’d definitely prefer someone who is around a lot.

Beau hates car rides – he should only travel in a crate, as it is less stressful for him, and should only travel when absolutely necessary.

Beau must have a dog door and access to the house when his person isn’t home.

Beau is an absolutely lovely and easy dog to have around, as long as you understand and respect his boundaries. He is looking for absolutely the right home to move into, so any applications should provide as much information about what “a day in the life of Beau” would look like in his potential new home.

'Rescued' is my favourite breed
