Hazel

Hazel

Animal ID No: ARF801
Rescue Date: 10 July 2021
Adopted Date: 19 September 2021

Please do not apply for Hazel if you have other dogs, cats, pocket pets, birds or small children.

Please also note, as Hazel is wary of strangers and things are a little different in these times, you may be required to meet with Hazel a few times before we move through the adoption process.

Hazel is a sweet girl, who while loved dearly in her previous home, didn’t have much socialisation done with her and this has made her a timid girl in new situations. While Hazel is sweet and cute and looks like butter wouldn’t melt (and at home when she is comfortable with her people and her surroundings this is the case), she does have some things she will need to work through. So please read her description fully and carefully before applying, as Hazel is not just looking for a great home she is looking for the RIGHT home.

Hazel will need an experienced owner, someone who will continue working on her socialisation and encouraging her to be comfortable in new situations. She will need someone who can teach her that visitors are good, new people mean treats and pats and are not something to be feared and that, yes, other people are allowed to walk on the street outside our home. Hazel takes a while to warm up to new people, but treats help with that and she can also be wary of people and dogs while walking on the street, but again treats help!

While Hazel is happy to be around other dogs, she does have some resource guarding around food and toys, this means  she will be rehomed as an only dog so she no longer feels the need to guard what she believes is hers. She will also not be rehomed to a home with cats, chickens, pocket pets or birds as she has quite a high prey drive and we don’t want her to get herself in trouble. Hazel will also not go to a home with small children as she gets very concerned over lots of noise and screaming.

Hazel is a Beagle Kelpie mix so is exceptionally smart, she already has a range of tricks and commands and would love someone who was willing to expand on that so she can earn the treats she absolutely loves. When Hazel has her walk to tire her body and does some training to tire her mind she shows you just how easy she can be. Spending the day laying in the sun, popping her little head up when she thinks a noise needs to be investigated and pottering around the yard and house until you are ready to spend some time with her. While she is happy pottering around doing her own thing she does prefer that you are still somewhere in the background, so Hazel will need someone who is home more often than not.

Hazel does have a loud bark and will use it when she feels it is necessary, but I have found she is quite receptive to a No and will look to her person for reassurance. Hazel also pulls hard on lead so her new person will need to continue to work on that so walks can be pleasant and not a pulling match. I have found if you bring a handful of treats, that encourages her to stay a bit more by your side so she can show you how incredibly focussed she can truely be.

To sum up – Hazel needs an experienced owner who is home more often than not, someone who is patient but will also help her move forward with her socialisation. Hazel would love to have a career in obedience or some other dog sport to keep her happy and busy.
